Ten-point wall check

Will your wall work? Ten checks

Ten quick questions about your wall, your socket and your fuse box. You get a score out of 20, any hard stops, and what to sort before you order. It takes about two minutes, and your answers stay on your device.

Ruled out: boundary walls, cladding, remediation. Ruled in: your own house wall.

01

Checks 1-3: direction and sun

1Which way does the wall face?

Stand with your back to the wall and look straight out. A phone compass helps.

2How much direct sun reaches it around the middle of the day?
3Is there a clear patch at least 2.0m wide and 1.2m high?

Clear of windows, doors, vents, pipes and the roof line. That's the space the smallest kit needs.

02

Checks 4-6: wall material, cladding and boundaries

4What's the wall made of?
5Is it a wall of your own house, not on a property boundary?

Garden and yard walls often sit on the boundary. So do walls shared with a neighbouring home.

6Is the building having, or due to have, external wall remediation?

For example cladding or fire-safety works on a block of flats.

03

Checks 7-8: height, access and permission

7Can the panels sit at a height that's safe to reach?
8Do you own the house, or have written permission?

04

Checks 9-10: socket and RCD

9Is there a weatherproof outdoor socket within 4m of the spot?

The kit's plug goes straight into it. Extension leads, cable reels and adaptors aren't allowed.

10Does your fuse box have modern RCD protection?

RCDs usually have a small test button marked T or Test.

Is the score a wall assessment?

No. It's a quick filter. The maker requires a professional assessment before any wall install, and that's what confirms the wall and the fixings.

Why is my garage wall only a maybe?

The kits are described for your own solid house wall. A garage or outbuilding wall needs a clear yes from your assessor, and it must never be on the boundary.
